U-MOVE

ACRONYM: U-MOVE is the acronym for SMART STRATEGIES FOR URBAN SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY: ROLE OF TRAVEL APPS.

FUNDING: Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2019-104273RB-100). «U-MOVE» is the acronym for «Intelligent strategies for sustainable urban mobility: the role of travel apps».

DURATION: June 2020 – June 2023 (36 months)

PARTICIPANTS: 4 universities – Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), National University of Distance Education (UNED), University of Extremadura (UNEX) and University of Lisbon (ULisboa).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential impact of urban travel apps (such as Google Maps, Moovit, Google Fit, Uber, EasyPark, Lime, Metro de Madrid Oficial, and others) on reducing car use in the periphery of cities.

STARTING HYPOTHESIS: The advent of the smartphone, and in particular of urban travel apps, may help to reduce the car use in the periphery of the cities.

 3 INTERNATIONAL CASE STUDIES:

  • 2 large metropolitan areas: Madrid and Lisbon, with complex public transportation systems.
  • 1 small city: Cáceres (Region of Extremadura, Spain) with a much simpler public transportation system.
